Effective: 2026-09-14
Applies to: the Hanzi Practice web app at hanzipractice.app and the Hanzi Practice Android app.
Hanzi Practice keeps your progress in your browser's local storage on your own device: words marked known, handwriting practice counts and saved free writes, activity log, daily goal, reminder setting, and pen-only setting. This data never leaves your device unless you export it or enable sync. You can delete it at any time with the in-app Reset, by clearing site data in your browser, or by uninstalling the app.
If you enable sync, you provide your own GitHub personal access token. The app stores that token only on your device and uses it to read and write a private Gist in your own GitHub account containing your progress. We never see the token or the Gist. GitHub's privacy policy governs that data: https://docs.github.com/site-policy/privacy-policies/github-privacy-statement. Turning sync off and clearing the token stops all communication with GitHub.
None of these requests include your identity, and we do not operate any of these services except hanzipractice.app, which is static hosting with no server-side logging by us.
The daily reminder is optional. It runs locally on your device and requires your permission. No notification data is sent anywhere.
The app does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.
Internet: to load the app and optional sync. Notifications: only if you turn on the daily reminder.
Updates to this policy will be posted at hanzipractice.app/privacy with a new effective date.
